5 Million of Australia’s current population of 20 million have migrated to Australia within the last 50 years. Consequently, the proportion of older people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds is increasing. Yet, with age people often reverse to their culturally determined behaviours and lose the ability to communicate in English. This can make caring for the elderly and people with special needs from CALD backgrounds a challenge for aged care and social service specialists. In this training course you will learn how culture impacts on values, communication style and behaviour as well as culturally determined attitudes towards ageing, special needs, illness and the role of the government, community and family. You will learn about relevant demographic data of your catchment area and a roadmap on how to work, engage and communicate effectively with CALD clients from specific, demographically relevant cultures.
Please note that this course can be tailored and delivered separately to planning staff and field workers.
